Iowa woman born deaf, now hears with new tech
(CNN/Meredith) – 23-year-old Nichole Helmic struggles to hear on her own.
Genetics lead Nichole to have 85% hearing loss in her left ear and 72% loss in her right.
She heard her first bird at age 12 with the help of hearing aids, but now Nichole is getting a special opportunity through theMiracle Ear Foundation. A new pair of upgraded, state-of-the-art hearing aids.
Hearing instrument specialist Laura Popelka can pick up what Nichole hears through her computer and adjust the sound levels.
“I actually got to hear my voice more clear for the first time.” Nichole hopes to spend her future following in Popelka’s footsteps in hopes of helping others who struggle to hear.
“I’ve always wanted to do something similar to this and one day, I will. There’s no ‘what ifs,’ I will do it.”
The hearing aids cost $6,000 dollars.
Nichole’s family said they wouldn’t be able to afford it without the help of the Miracle Ear Foundation. The organization says they’ve helped more than nine thousand people in nearly 30 years of operation.
